The 7 Most Important Sections of a BI Business Case
Almost one-third of all business intelligence projects fail to “meet the objectives of the business,” according to Gartner Research Inc.
Andy Hayler echoes that sentiment by noting that high failure rates are also associated with data management projects in general.
He contends that nearly every one of these failures can be attributed to the lack of a business case that should include, at minimum, information regarding the total cost of ownership, the potential risk of failure, and the benefits to the organization as a result of success.

Master Data Management: How to Avoid that “Pie in Your Face” Moment
If there’s any good news that’s come out of the phone hacking scandal involving Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., it’s that now maybe other companies will pay more attention to corporate governance.
As I’m sure you’re aware Murdoch shut down his News of the World tabloid in the face of allegations that its employees hacked into cellphones and voicemails of various victims to get a better story or a scoop.
Murdoch has said he didn’t know anything about anyone in his organization committing any crimes until it was too late. He’s also admitted he was blind sided and did not have full oversight in the operations of his media empire. The ABCs of Master Data Management
A: What is it?
At a basic level, “master data” is simply data that is used by two or more applications or systems in an organization. Common examples found in most companies include Customer data, Employee data, Product data, Asset data, and Location data. “Management” of master data is needed in order to ensure that master data is exactly the same everywhere it is accessed in the organization.
Fundamental reality: Master data exists in all companies, whether or not it is called master data, and whether or not it is managed in an organized manner.
Master Data Management (MDM) is a plan for creating and maintaining consistent, accurate, and appropriate lists of master data. This is more complicated than one might think, because:
