Get an overview of projects, schedules, resources, and budgets. Dynamically group, aggregate, and filter by any measure. Drill down for full details.

Requirements

  1. Spotfire DXP version 1.0 or later.

Instructions

If at any point you need help, you can watch the movie to see these instructions being carried out.
  1. Right-click on the following link and save the sample data file to your computer: projectData.csv
Here is a snippet of this file:

Notice the format of the data: Each row is a project, and each column has a particular kind of information about the project.
  2. Open Spotfire DXP. Drag and drop the projectData.csv file onto the DXP window. Spotfire shows you a preview of the data. Click OK.
Spotfire reads in the data, automatically recognizes all the data fields, and creates an initial scatter plot of Perceived Investment Value vs. Dollars Spent. Spotfire also creates filters along the right for each data field.
  3. Close the graph by right-clicking on it and selecting Close.
  4. Click the bar chart icon.
Spotfire displays a bar chart, initially configured with a bar for each manager, and the height of the bars reflecting the sum of the Perceived Investment Value for the collection of projects under each manager. If you wish, drag the bottom line of the chart up a bit to make room for the names along the bottom.
  5. We would like to see the budgets being managed by each manager. On the Y axis, click on the arrow that's part of the "Sum(Percieved Investment value)" label, and select Budget.
The bar heights for each manager change to reflect the total budget for all of their projects.
  6. We would also like to see how the budget amounts break down by country. Click on the Country filter, drag it on top of the bar chart, and drop it on the color palette icon .
Now we can see that most of the budget is going for projects in Spain, and that most of these are managed by Tanisha Shaffer.
  7. Now you can click on any bar segment to see details of those projects in the Details-on-Demand panel in the lower-right.
  8. Try adjusting some of the filters, and note how the graph updates. For example, in the Country filter, uncheck Spain to see the breakdown among the other countries in more detail. When you're finished, reset the filtering by clicking on the Reset icon .
  9. Now let's see the workload on each project manager over time. Click the cross table icon .
DXP initially displays projects' Investment Value, broken down by Manager and Country.
  10. Make the following changes to the table:
    • Along the bottom of the table, click on the arrow that's part of the "Sum(Percieved Investment value)" label, and select Aggregation->Count.
    • Along the top of the graph, click on the arrow that's part of the "Country" label, and select Est End Date->Year (Est End Date).
    • Click on the + next to the "Year (est End Date)" label , and select Est End Date->Quarter (Est End Date).
    • Right-click in the table and select Properties. Select the Colors tab, and click "Continuous coloring by cell values". Click Close.
The table shows us the number of projects each manager expects to complete over the next 5 quarters. The coloring highlights the busiest quarters.

You can continue to interact with this data. Try highlighting cells in the table or bars in the graph. Try using some of the other data fields to summarize projects in different ways.
