Dynamic Text in text area with out using button

Hello, I am very new to spotfire so please forgive any ignorance. I am trying to populate a max(date) from a database into a text area. So that it would read something like "period from [startdate] to [enddate]" with startdate and enddate populated from the data. Is this possible without having the need for a user to initiate a script with a button click?
